One Of My Favorite Super Foods, The Blueberry

Updated: Apr 23, 2021

June to mid-July is prime Blueberry season.

The Blueberry is a plant native to North America. There are several states known for their Blueberries and Michigan is one. Maine is at the top of the list.

Native Americans used the entire plant, in many ways. The plant was used as food, a flavoring, and a medicine from the root to the fruit. They revered the plant as a gift from the Great Spirit. The word they used for the fruit translated to The Star Berry. Today the Star Berry is considered a super food.

I was out picking Blueberries with my mother and sisters almost every summer growing up. I remember the heat and hot sun but most of all the berries. My mom would freeze them, just a handful in a baggie. She made jam also. On a hot summer day taking a bag of frozen berries from the freezer to munch them was a cooling treat.

High in antioxidants and anti-ageing properties. Want healthy skin? Eat the Blueberry.

This Star Berry is loaded with Vitamin B6, vitamin C, vitamin K and dietary fiber. They also have a minimal effect on blood sugar, positive effects on blood pressure and your cholesterol levels.

They also contain Flavonoids. Flavonoids function as an antioxidant and are nutrients known to fight free radicals. More on Antioxidants and Flavonoids from WebMd

Whether you're going to go and pick them yourself or buy them at the market or a roadside stand enjoy some Blueberries. They freeze well and are a healthy and tasty treat for children as well as adults. Enjoy them all year-long.

As I always say, sweeten with honey and move away from processed sugar. Fresh pineapple zipped up in the blender will also sweeten instead of sugar.
