Baseball's First Female Scout


Edith Houghton was 33 years old in 1945 when she was signed as a ‪‎baseball‬ scout by the Philadelphia Phillies, The first female scout for the major leagues on this day, Feburay 15.

Edith played shortstop in women's baseball for The Philadelphia Bobbies and a couple other teams.

She served in the United States Navy during World War II.

Her position a scout lasted for four years untill she reinlisted inthe Navy and served during the Korean and Vietnam wars. She retired from the Navy as a chief petty officer.

Edith Houghton died on February 2, 2013 just 8 days befor her 101st birthday.
